The head coach of a major college football program is celebrating the power of prayer after one of his assistants survived a life-threatening medical crisis that placed him in the hospital fighting for his life.

Tennessee assistant coach William Inge was hospitalized in September after suffering a sudden medical emergency that left him in critical condition —and his friends and family requesting prayer for his healing. The university never disclosed the nature of his illness, describing it only as a personal medical issue, although it was serious enough to keep Inge in the hospital for several weeks as doctors worked to stabilize his condition.

After Saturday’s win over Arkansas, head coach Josh Heupel provided an encouraging update on Inge, saying his friend and colleague had recovered enough that he was close to being discharged. Tennessee (5-1) is ranked No. 14 in the Associated Press poll.

“Coach Inge faced a ton of adversity, and was really fighting for his life, and it kind of came out of nowhere,” Heupel said. “And there's a lot of people that have been praying —our football family, university, but our fans, too."

“Sometimes it's rare in this world that you get to see a true miracle right before your eyes, but that's truly what we've been able to see, following Coach Inge, and that's what his family has seen, too.”

Heupel said Inge’s recovery was a testament to the power of prayer and expressed optimism about the next stage of his recovery.

“He's doing really well. He should be able to get out of the hospital here the middle of next week, hopefully, and begin his rehab process,” Heupel said, referencing the week of Oct. 11. “But if you ever question the power of prayer, anybody that's seen this can attest to the power of prayer."

“And so, I just want to thank our Vol family and people across the country inside of college football that have had him in their prayers, so very thankful that he's coming out the other side of it.”

Inge’s wife, Rae Ann Pierce-Inge, also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and support.

“Yes thank you Vol Nation, our football family, friends all over,” she wrote on X/Twitter. “We are so thankful for your prayers!! God has seen us thru and he will be back soon!!”

Inge coaches the linebackers and is in his third season at Tennessee, having joined the program in 2024. A former Iowa football player now in his 29th season of coaching, he has spent 10 seasons as a defensive coordinator or co-defensive coordinator at schools including Washington, Fresno State and Indiana.
